Coral (animal)
Pequeños animales pertenecientes al filo Cnidaria, clase anthozoa, que viven en colonias unidos entre sí por la cal que extraen del mar formando arrecifes y estructuras ramificadas de color rojo o rosáceo. Algunos corales pueden vivir en zonas frías y oscuras. Pero las especies que forman arrecifes necesitan aguas claras, cálidas y luminosas. A medida que estos corales crecen, sus esqueletos calizos se van soldando unos a otros, dando origen a los arrecifes. El arrecife de mayor longitud es la Gran Barrera de Arrecifes, en la costa de Queensland en Australia: tiene mas de 2.000 km² y es una de las construcciones naturales más grandes del mundo. Los arrecifes coralinos forman el hogar de muchos organismos marinos, que allí encuentran alimento y protección contra los depredadores.
